Broadway Boot Camp: From Sondheim to Glee

  • Act, sing, and dance with active, exciting, seasoned Broadway and television professionals – become a triple-threat!
  • Create an exciting audition repertoire and technique.
  • Learn to adjust performance techniques to various styles for theatre and all media.
  • Refine cold reading and learn to make active choices in callbacks.
  • Perform with an ensemble of skilled musical theatre lovers.
  • Make invaluable professional contacts.
  • This course will culminate in a public performance by the participants with Guest Artist Susan Egan.

Undergraduate: DRAMA 422, 3 units
Graduate: DRAMA 622, 3 units


All lovers of musical theatre should apply – dancers, singers, and actors – from high school seniors to veteran performers. We will work with your level of expertise and help you develop all the skills necessary to perform on the Broadway stage, on television, and in film.

1)      Create a digital audition on YouTube, Vimeo, or some other website.
2)      Provide the link to your digital audition, with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts office by May 2, 2014.

Professor Joanne Gordon


Susan Egan –
Susan Egan has traversed all four corners of the entertainment industry, making powerful impressions in theatre, film, television, and music. She headlined on Broadway as Thoroughly Modern Millie, won critical acclaim as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, starred in Triumph of Love and State Fair, and received Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations for “Best Actress” as the original Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She’s been seen on film in 13 Going on 30Gotta Kick It Up, countless independents and voiced the animated characters: Meg in Disney’s Hercules, Lin in the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, and more. She spent two seasons on WB’s Nikki and guest starred on HouseNUMB3RSNYPD BlueArli$$Drew CareyParty of Five, Great Performances, and others. Susan sings with symphonies worldwide and has more than 40 recording credits, including her solo CDs: All That and MoreSo FarWinter TracksCoffeeHouseSusan Egan LIVE, and 2011’s The Secret of Happiness. Roma Maffia
Perhaps best known for her recurring role on Nip/Tuck (produced by Ryan Murphy, the producer of Glee), Roma is a seasoned star of film and television. As season regular or guest star in almost every national television favorite in the last ten years including Dexter, The West Wing, Law and Order, Judging Amy, The Sopranos. and Chicago Hope – to name just a few – Roma knows how to land the role. Her list of film credits is equally impressive including I am Sam, Rules of Engagement, and Married to the Mob. She has worked with many of the leading film directors of our time including Barry Levinson, Jonathan Demme, William Friedkin, Bruce Beresford, and Ron Howard. Roma will teach acting for the camera and working the business.

Alexandra Billings –
A perennial favorite at Summer Arts, Alex has been a member of the Steppenwolf faculty for many years. Renowned as one of the most exciting Viewpoints teachers in the world, Alex is also a dynamite cabaret artist, singer, and actor. She has received numerous accolades for her work on stage in Chicago including Joseph Jefferson Awards for her work with the Steppenwolf and Bailiwick Companies. She was named “Outstanding Cabaret Artist of the Year” by After Dark. Alex will fuse both her passions, and teach a Viewpoints class as well as work with all students on developing their cabaret material.

Andre Garner
Andre has enjoyed a successful career as a superb singer/dancer.  He has appeared on Broadway in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Music Man, Marie Christine and Grease, and has been featured in the national tours of Dreamgirls, The Color Purple, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Miss Saigon. Directors with whom Andre has worked include the best in the business – Nicholas Hytner, Susan Stroman, Jeff Calhoun, and Graciela Danielle. Andre will focus on audition techniques and selling a song.

Brian Moe
Brian has performed in productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Victor Victoria, Me and My Girl, A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He has choreographed productions of Cats, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Il Nozze di Figaro, Cendrillon, Evita, Nine, Side Show, and Spring Awakening.  Brian serves as the artistic director and composer for his own company, INKED Dance, based in Long Beach, California. Brian has won many awards for his choreographic abilities, and is a member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists and BMI, and serves as treasurer for the Long Beach Dance Foundation. He will conduct the daily stretching and limbering workshop each morning and will teach the dance styles class from tap to jazz to modern to partnering.

Jarod Phillip Sheahan
Freelance musician, performer, teacher, session player, arranger, and writer, Jarod Phillip Sheahan grew up in Davenport, Iowa where he was classically trained from the age of 5. He moved to California in 1996 to join the The Young Americans. For six years, he toured the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Japan teaching theatre and music. He is now an Associate Director and Resident Arranger for The Young Americans. Jarod has worked for many theaters and schools including Disneyland, CSU Long Beach, Chapman University, Orange County High School of the Arts, Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Saddleback College, California Repertory Company, and the Troubadour Theater Company.
