Trustees Approve Modifications to Title 5

At the recently concluded January 2013 board meeting, CSU Trustees approved a proposal to establish a maximum of 120 units, wherever feasible, needed to complete a baccalaureate degree. Throughout the CSU, there are over 500 degree offerings that require more than 120 units (or 180 units at a quarter campus). This modification will shorten the time needed to complete a degree, reduce costs for both students and the state and provide additional access for students. Programs that have specific unit requirements outlined in Title 5 including architecture, landscape architecture, fine arts and music will carry a 120-unit minimum. The Chancellor, after consultation with faculty, will have the authority to provide exceptions for specific programs.

Campuses will review programs that are above the 120 unit maximum and are expected to reduce baccalaureate unit requirements for the 2014-15 academic year.
