CSU faculty and staff recognized for developing online teacher credential program

(Feb. 20, 2014) – The California State University (CSU) will receive the Best Practice Award for the Innovative Use of Technology for CalStateTEACH from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) at the organization’s annual meeting in Indianapolis on March 1. The prestigious national award honors the program’s success in bridging the theory and practice of educator preparation through the use of technology.

“The CSU is honored to be the recipient of this important national award,” said CSU Assistant Vice Chancellor for Teacher Education Programs Dr. Beverly Young. “Through CalStateTEACH’s visionary leadership and talented and engaged faculty, the program serves as a national model that has already prepared over 3,000 highly qualified teachers for tomorrow’s schools.”

CalStateTEACH utilizes online technology to prepare teacher candidates for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential, which qualifies them to teach in California’s K-8 general education classrooms. The online platform makes earning a teaching credential more accessible to those in underserved areas of California.

CalStateTEACH students use a course website to access curriculum materials, activity discussion rooms, and technology support. They also interact with CSU faculty through email, videoconferencing and at their school site, where they receive additional support and mentorship. The program is divided into four administrative regions throughout the state, and candidates are assigned to centers based on the location of the school district in which they live or teach.

“The CalStateTEACH program is an outstanding example of broad-based effective integration of technology, pedagogy and content,” said AACTE Innovation and Technology Committee Chair Dr. Mary Herring. “They are to be commended for stretching beyond the norm in teacher education to impact the learning of students across the state.”

AACTE’s award selection committee also noted that the CalStateTEACH program exhibited sustainable impact, strong research basis, robust integration of technology and a social justice agenda to make learning accessible to all.
