New Solar Panels Will Provide Energy for SDSU’s Aztec Student Union

Aztecs celebrated today the installation of a 356-kilowatt solar photovoltaics array on the top level of Parking Structure 1 that will provide energy to the new Aztec Student Union, currently under construction. The newest development supports the efforts of students, faculty and staff to develop sustainable practices and facilities across campus.

Manufactured by Kyocera Solar, the solar array, which will also serve as a shade structure for parked cars, is the largest solar PV installation on campus and is part of the planned features of the new student union that seeks Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification. Food Waste from Campus to be Converted into Renewable Energy

One-third of the waste created at Humboldt State is from food. And soon, that waste will be producing renewable energy for the community.


Students with WRRAP compost organic waste from campus. They collect an average of 8,000 pounds of food waste annually. The new program could divert as much as 300 tons of food waste from the landfill annually.

HSU is partnering with the Humboldt Waste Management Authority and Environmental Science Associates to divert 100 percent of the campus’s organic waste by December 2012. The initial 12-18 months of the program will be used to initiate the project and work out logistics.

Report Highlights Chico State’s Sustainability Practices

A sustainability report is being posted on the California State University, Chico website this week that highlights many efforts on campus to incorporate “green” practices into how the University conducts its business and takes care of its facilities and property.

The 24-page report, produced by the CSU, Chico Division of Business and Finance, has sections on energy use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, alternative transportation, stewardship of land, green building, purchasing and cleaning, waste diversion and recycling and water conservation.
