Two Beds, Two Homes

Posted by Beatriz Alvarez

I always wanted to leave home and experience life beyond the small town I had lived in all my life. But when I moved to East Bay, I cried for weeks, thinking it was a mistake to leave my comfort zone to a place where I didn’t know anyone. It was a year until I felt completely comfortable. I became friends with my roommates and became involved in campus activities as a contributor for the school newspaper, design editor for one of the school’s literary magazine, and a volunteer in the Event Squad.

My advice: don’t quit when it gets tough. Enjoy the ride. If you ever doubt the decision you make about leaving home, remind yourself why you did. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. The Bay has become my second home. And put yourself out there and have fun. Life doesn’t always have to be so serious.

Get Involved with Your Major

Posted by Shannon Banks

Part of the college experience is getting involved with campus activities that will help you learn useful skills for your major and career. As a journalism major with an emphasis in media studies, I took the opportunity to work behind the scenes at a San Diego State University’s men’s basketball game with the media relations team. I spent the game running stats to the tech vans, analyzing players’ moves and being present for the post-game press conference. Afterwards, I transcribed players’ quotes from the press conference to post online. I really enjoyed this opportunity because it gave me a glimpse into the real work I would be doing in my career field.

Let’s Go Team!

Before heading off to college, the number one piece of advice you will receive is to get involved. Students have so many options to choose from when first arriving on campus and for me, becoming a supporter of San Diego State’s many athletic teams ended up being the best fit.

“The Show”, the name of SDSU’s student section, has become a close-knit group of friends that enjoys attending as many sports events as possible. Feeling the energy swell up from the crowd, onto the court, and into our players during a neck-to-neck basketball game is indescribable. The students know that they have not only helped the team snatch the victory, but also played a major part in positively representing our school.

I highly recommend going to as many sporting events as possible when getting involved in school.
