Not going in straight to a four-year university was something I chose to do, but in hindsight I have my doubts about it. I attended Ventura and Oxnard Colleges before transferring into CSU Channel Islands. It was a great experience and it did help me decide what career I wanted in life, but in those two years I dedicated all my time to school without getting involved in any other activities while I was there. When I began my first semester in CSUCI, I knew that I did want to be involved in more activities, but being a transfer student is not easy. I had to get used to a new campus, new classes, and a new system. Thankfully my sister, who has been attending this school since her freshman year here, was able to help me during my second semester. Little by little, I have been able to be more involved in school and I know that each program I have been involved in since then has helped me grow as a student and as a person.
When I graduated community college and looked back on my two years I noticed that I had not been at all involved in school activities. Once I entered CSU Channel Islands I decided that when I graduated I wanted to look back and say that I had been involved in school. I became a member of different clubs and became a member of a great program called LEAP (Leaders in Education Awareness Program). LEAP has helped me meet amazing new people who I enjoy seeing every Friday when we give tours and presentations to K-8 students about college. Every Friday I look forward to meeting new children and talking to them about anything that’s on their minds. I also enjoy spending my Fridays with the rest of the LEAP members because even though we are so different we share the same desire to volunteer our time to such an amazing program. Because of LEAP I know I will look back and remember that I did get involved and that my years at CSU Channel Islands will be unforgettable thanks to the people I have met and the children I have helped.
Hi, my name is Jenny Calderon and I am a sophomore at CSU Channel Islands! I am majoring in psychology and minoring in biology. My ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician. I realize that it will take years for me to reach that goal, so in the meantime I try to accomplish multiple shorter-term goals. Before you get to college you plan on just going to classes and maybe working if possible. However, once you get there you’ll realize how much universities have to offer you and how many unique opportunities you are presented! For example you can join a club or start your own, study abroad in different continents like Africa, or conduct research with professors! So don’t waste any time once you are in college; take advantage and do everything you can! It’s the time to experience life!!
