What’s Available – financial aid

Even the colleges with the lowest tuitions, like the CSU, might seem unaffordable at first—but don’t panic! There are plenty of ways to help pay for your university education. Before you start, you should remember that it is very important to meet all deadlines when you apply for financial aid to make sure you secure the largest possible award.

Here are the four main sources of financial aid for new and returning college students:

  • GRANTS
The State of California provides funds to undergraduate and vocational students through its Cal Grant program—granted free of charge to eligible applicants, meaning it’s money you’ll never have to repay! Visit the program’s website to read up on the requirements and potential award amounts, then make sure you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before March 2.
  • SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are awarded by universities and other organizations as gifts to students based on financial need, career interests, or impressive academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities—so don’t forget to follow your dreams and try your best to earn As and Bs!
    Search for scholarships and apply
  • LOANS
You can also accept money from the government in the form of a loan, which means you’ll have to pay it back once you graduate. Get all the details
  • WORK-STUDY
Working part-time while in college is a great way to cover some of your college expenses while also honing the skills you’ll use after graduation. The federal government funds thousands of paid student positions every year. Find out more
