Getting Involved At School

Posted by Francisco

My name is Francisco, and I am currently a senior at CSU East Bay. I am originally from Southern California, but I have been living in the Bay Area since my freshmen year of college. My first two here, all I did was go to school, go to work, and then go home. Honestly, it wasn’t the best idea to do that. Finally, my third year, I decided to get involved at school. I am now a part of a national fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, the University Orientation Team, the Freshman Year Experience program. I’m also a student ambassador and now I am Homecoming King! I never knew how much more fun school and living on my own could be.

In other words, whatever you do, definitely get involved no matter what school you go to; it will change your life. I know it changed mine!

Making Friends in College

Posted by Marissa

College can be an intimidating place if you don’t know anyone. Many students who have a good experience in college have most likely made a strong group of friends. I encourage all new students to make as many friends as possible so that they become more comfortable in their new home over the next few years.

Keep the tips below in mind once you start your college career.

  • Introduce yourself to people in your classes. Not only are you making a friend, but a study buddy as well.

  • Join campus clubs. Being involved in clubs is a great way to try new things and make friends while doing it!

  • Volunteer for organizations. Volunteering not only looks good on your resume but also is another way of forming relationships with students.

  • Go to school events. Whether it is a sports game or guest speaker series, make sure you go and mingle with fellow colleagues!

  • Work on campus. Many campuses offer student employment on campus. This is another way to make money and form bonds with fellow students.

  • Involve yourself in sports or physical activity classes. Being part of a team is a great way to make life-long friendships!

Lend a Helping Hand

Posted by Matthew

Volunteering is not only an important part of college, but it’s a great way to give back and make yourself feel good! I’ve had a lot of great volunteer opportunities, including tutoring and mentoring elementary school kids at a public library, helping out at different events, like the Día de Los Muertos festival, and even building houses in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. It’s a great feeling knowing you can give back or just help someone out every now and then. Because let’s face it, we could all use a helping hand every now and then, so why not let it be for someone else?
