Going Back to the Basics of Leadership

Posted by Kiera Sailor

CSU Channel Islands offers opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, such as the leadership certification program. I attended the 10th annual Back to Basics Leadership Retreat, the first level of the program, which teaches students the basics of leadership including communication, teamwork, professionalism and motivation.

Through the retreat, I learned important skills and characteristics of a leader. Delegate tasks, especially the ones that you are already good at. Hold onto those that are difficult because that is how you grow; you won’t know what you are capable of until you challenge yourself. Higher education is a place to try new things. Before college, I was so shy and insecure about interacting with others. College put me in a position to explore and step out of my comfort zone, and it changed the way I view myself.

I also learned to do everything in such a way that everyone can see I am honest, clear and thorough. I need to be bold rather than worry about “looking good.” Sometimes, we are so worried about how we look that we forget to hold ourselves with integrity. The most important aspects of being a leader and simply ourselves, is living life with integrity and transparency.

Which University Should You Attend?

Posted by Kyle Barras

As the deadline to enroll in a campus approaches, you may find yourself having trouble deciding which university to spend your next four years at. I was in the same position three years ago, and here is how I finally decided to attend San Diego State University.

Graduating high school, I knew that I wanted to major in accounting. SDSU stood out because it offered the best resources through its great accounting program. I knew the major would be difficult, but I was comforted knowing I would receive a lot of support.

Similar to most incoming freshmen, I was apprehensive to leave my family behind as I left for college. I wanted to be close enough to come home occasionally, but far enough to gain a sense of independence. I found that perfect combination at SDSU.

Major options and campus location may help determine where you should attend college. You can also look at factors such as financial aid, sports, and campus involvement opportunities. It is crucial to decide what is most important to you and then determine which university will best suit your needs. When it comes down to it, choose the college that best represents your desired experience and future.

Get Ready for Admission Decisions

Posted by Mireille Garcia Serrato

Some of you may have already heard back from the colleges and universities you applied to. Congratulations! For those who haven’t, you should be receiving your responses throughout the spring. As you wait for your admission decisions, your main focus should be to continue keeping up with the new semester and maintaining good grades (that means C’s and above).

Many colleges require you to pass your classes with a C or above. Most also require you to maintain your GPA and although this can sound stressful, it is important for you to try your best. Sometimes if you receive a grade lower than a C, your admission can be at risk. Doing well in your classes is essential to maintaining your acceptance if you have already heard back from campuses. And when you do hear back, remember to stay motivated, do well academically, reach out and explore the campuses!
