Students, faculty and staff at area colleges are planning to participate in what is being billed as nationwide rally against cuts in education funding.

The National Day of Action to Defend the Right to Education, organized by the Occupy Education movement, will take place Thursday.

“Education is being privatized. We are slowly being kicked out,” said Tiana Vargas, a student leader of the action at San Diego City College. “The cost just keeps going up.”

At City College, students will walk out of class at 11 a.m., Vargas said. Joined by supporters, they will then march across campus to hold a rally at Gorton Quad.

UC San Diego students will walk out of class at 11:30, according to a student organizer and hold a noon rally on Library Walk followed by a march across campus and “teach ins.”

At San Diego State University, a walk out is scheduled for noon, followed a rally at the Scripps Cottage Patio.
