CSU Appointee to Student Aid Commission

One of CSU’s own was recently appointed by Governor Brown to sit on the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). Dr. William Gregory Sawyer, the current and founding Vice President of Student Affairs from CSU Channel Islands will serve as the system commissioner.

“Dr. Sawyer has a long and distinguished career serving and mentoring students,” states Richard Rush, President, CSU Channel Islands. “He will bring this experience to bear fruit to the benefit of all California college students.”

CSAC provides financial aid policy analysis and leadership in partnership with California’s colleges and universities. Commissioners are responsible for overseeing this agency whose primary role is to administer financial aid programs for students attending public and private universities, college and vocational schools throughout the state.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Sawyer has dedicated himself to students. He has built a diverse student-centered and student-focused Student Affairs division which fosters an inclusive and collegial learning environment. Dr. Sawyer has a vast knowledge of issues that pertain to student financial aid. Prior to his coming to the CSU, he was the founding Dean of Students and Chief Student Affairs Officer at Florida Gulf Coast University, in Fort Myers.

He has been honored several times for his work in and around student affairs and financial aid, including being recognized by the American College Personnel Association with the Senior Practitioner of the Year Award. In addition, he is a recipient of the Trustees’ prestigious Wang Family Excellence Award, which recognizes the work of four outstanding faculty and an outstanding administrator each year.

The CSU congratulates Dr. Sawyer on his most recent appointment and looks forward to having his voice on behalf of the CSU as part of the Commission.
